Update, September 9, 2026: It’s official. Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Ultra 4 today at its “Surprise and Shine” event, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and Apple’s first foldable iPhone. Everything below has been updated from leaks and rumors to Apple’s confirmed specs — including one major correction to the redesign story we were tracking all summer.
The Apple Watch Ultra has used essentially the same design for four years. Ultra, Ultra 2, Ultra 3, and now Ultra 4 — same titanium case, same dimensions, same basic layout.
We spent months tracking a “contested” story about whether the Ultra 4 would finally get a thinner case. It’s now resolved — and the answer disappointed the more optimistic leakers.
What Actually Changed From the Leaks — The Short Version
Before the deep dive, here’s how the summer’s leaks held up against Apple’s actual announcement:
| Leaked claim | What actually happened |
|---|---|
| 15% thinner case (DigiTimes) | Did not happen. Case is identical 49×44×12mm to Ultra 3. Gurman was right. |
| Real-time blood pressure alerts (Strong Leak) | Did not ship. No mention in official materials. |
| Touch ID via “AppleMesa” codename | Confirmed absent. No mention anywhere. |
| Second Action Button | Confirmed absent. Not part of the launch. |
| S11 chip | ✅ Confirmed |
| 8-sensor ring / re-architected sensors | ✅ Broadly confirmed — Apple calls it the “Health Sensing System” with new optical and electrical heart sensors, though Apple’s own materials don’t use the specific term “8-sensor ring” |
| 48–72 hour battery range | ✅ Confirmed at the higher end: 50hrs normal, 84hrs Low Power Mode |
| MicroLED not this generation | ✅ Confirmed correct |
| Glucose monitoring not coming | ✅ Confirmed correct |
| Readiness score, Audio Intelligence, redesigned Health app | Not leaked at all — completely new information from the announcement |
Apple Watch Ultra 4 Price — Confirmed
Confirmed by Apple
Apple held the price at $799, matching Ultra, Ultra 2, and Ultra 3 for a fourth straight generation. The $899 some analysts expected did not happen.
Apple Watch Ultra 4 Release Date — Confirmed

- Announced: September 9, 2026
- Pre-orders: Open today
- In-store availability: Friday, September 18, 2026
Design — Resolved: No Case Redesign This Generation
Confirmed via Apple’s official tech specs
This was the headline uncertainty of the entire leak cycle, and it’s now settled: the Ultra 4 case measures 49mm × 44mm × 12mm — the same dimensions as Ultra 3. Weight increased marginally, from 61.6g to 63.0g (+1.4g).
DigiTimes’ May 2026 report of a “15% thinner” case did not materialize for this generation. Mark Gurman’s August 6 report that he expected no major design changes turned out to be the more accurate read.
It’s possible DigiTimes’ supply chain sources were picking up signals about a design change that got shelved, or were describing a change that will land in a future generation — but for the Ultra 4 specifically, the case is unchanged.
What did change:
- New titanium alloys — Apple’s materials note 100% recycled Grade 5 titanium in the case
- Natural and black titanium finishes carry over unchanged
- New band colors: Trail Loop in dark umber, sand, and burgundy; Alpine Loop in desert, dark olive, and burgundy; Ocean Band now in translucent silicone (translucent gray, kelp, and black)
- Apple Watch Hermès Ultra 4 adds a new Grand H titanium band with a built-in extension mechanism for wetsuits, plus an exclusive “Fathom and Wonder” watch face
What did NOT change: case dimensions, Touch ID (absent), a second Action Button (absent), MicroLED display (still not this generation — Ultra 4 uses an improved LTPO OLED panel).

Health Sensing System — The Real Hardware Story
Confirmed
Apple’s headline hardware claim is the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable — based on Apple’s own study of 1,000+ participants against competing wearables. New optical and electrical heart sensors, paired with larger, more power-efficient green LEDs, now measure heart rate every five seconds continuously throughout the day, not just during workouts.
HRV measurement frequency increased up to 24x, split into two distinct readings: Recovery HRV (daily stress/recovery signal) and overall HRV (broader cardiovascular health insight).
Readiness — completely new, not previously leaked
A new daily 0–10 score analyzing recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep, paired with one of four actionable recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. It updates throughout the day as new data comes in — an intense workout or a shift in vitals can move the score in real time.
Blood Pressure — Correction: Did Not Ship
This did not happen — walking back our summer coverage
We reported this summer, based on DigiTimes and MacRumors sourcing, that Apple had submitted a real-time blood pressure alert feature for FDA review, expected to ship with the Ultra 4. That feature is not part of today’s announcement. Apple’s official materials make no mention of it.
If you own an Ultra 3 or later, you already have the existing Hypertension Notifications feature (30-day trend analysis), which continues unchanged. Whether the real-time version is still in FDA review and could arrive as a future software update, or was shelved entirely, is unknown — Apple has not commented.
Touch ID and the Second Action Button — Both Confirmed Absent
Neither made it into the announcement. The “AppleMesa” firmware references from earlier this year did not translate into a shipping feature this generation — consistent with Gurman’s August reporting that Apple prioritized battery and sensor hardware over fingerprint authentication.
Audio Intelligence — New, Not Previously Leaked
This is the biggest surprise of the announcement — a feature category that wasn’t part of any leak coverage this summer.
Powered by the S11 chip, on-device Apple Intelligence, and Private Cloud Compute, Audio Intelligence includes:
- Sound Recognition — alerts deaf and hard-of-hearing users to sirens, alarms, doorbells, or a baby crying, even without a nearby iPhone
- Live Rewind — double-press the Digital Crown to see the last 15 seconds of conversation as a text snippet
- Siri Recap — auto-generates titles and key points from conversations after the fact, viewable in the new Siri app
- Shazam — instantly IDs music playing nearby, shown in the Smart Stack
Apple emphasizes these features don’t store audio recordings — raw audio is processed in a hardware-isolated “Secure Exclave” on the S11 chip and immediately deleted. Live Rewind and Siri Recap arrive in beta later this year and require an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later.
For the full technical breakdown — including exactly how to enable Live Rewind and Siri Recap, and how the Secure Exclave buffer works — see our complete Series 12 & Ultra 4 guide, which covers Audio Intelligence in depth since it’s identical across both models.
Redesigned Health App — New Longevity Tab
The iPhone Health app gets a new Insights tab (timely health summaries) and a new Longevity tab, which includes Health Age — showing how your metrics track relative to your actual age.
The app can now also assess flexibility, strength, and balance using vision-based AI on iPhone combined with Apple Watch heart rate data, and offers optional lab tests (50+ biomarkers, $119) through ~2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations in the U.S. Arrives later this year, starting in U.S. English.
Battery Life — Confirmed Numbers
The 48–72 hour range we projected over the summer landed toward the higher end:
- Normal use: up to 50 hours (up from 42 on Ultra 3)
- Low Power Mode: up to 84 hours (up from 72)
- Outdoor Workout: 18 hours with full GPS + heart rate (up from 14)
- Extended Workout mode: 25 hours
- Max Extended Workout mode: 45 hours — Apple notes this is enough for most 100-mile races, using 1-second GPS intervals throughout
- Charging: 15 minutes = 18 hours of normal use (up from 12); 5 minutes = 10 hours of sleep tracking
Most Accurate Step Tracking of Any Smartwatch — New Claim
Apple says a redesigned pedometer model, built on new machine learning algorithms and the S11 chip, now delivers the most accurate step tracking of any smartwatch, validated in Apple’s own 1,000-step accuracy testing. A new Steps complication shows real-time counts on the watch face.
watchOS 27 — Confirmed
Ships alongside Ultra 4 on Monday, September 14, 2026 (compatible with Series 9 and later, SE 3, Ultra 2 and later):
- Siri AI — Apple Intelligence-powered Siri with personal context understanding, rolling out in beta September 14 (English first)
- Dynamic app grid with Siri-suggested apps
- New single-handed tap gesture for the Smart Stack
- Smart Stack widget suggestions (e.g., Parked Car, birthday reminders)
- Perimenopause/menopause support added to Cycle Tracking
- Workout Buddy now works without a nearby iPhone, adds Spanish support

How Ultra 4 Compares to the Competition
vs Garmin Fenix 9
Garmin’s fēnix 9 launched August 25, 2026, at $999.99, with up to 291 days of battery in power-saving mode on the Pro Solar tier — a figure Ultra 4’s 50-84 hours has no realistic path to matching. Garmin remains the choice for serious outdoor athletes who need weeks or months without a charger and offline navigation. Apple’s case rests on everyday health features, emergency safety tools, and ecosystem depth instead.
See our full Garmin Fenix 9 vs Apple Watch Ultra 4 comparison.
vs Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 launched July 22, 2026, with a Snapdragon Wear Elite chip and 5G connectivity in the US. For iPhone users there’s no real choice — Ultra 4 is the only option that works fully with iPhone. Android users should see our Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 guide.
vs Apple Watch Series 12
Series 12 launched alongside Ultra 4, also getting the S11 chip and watchOS 27. It skips the titanium build, the larger battery, and the Health Sensing System’s continuous 5-second heart rate measurement. If outdoor durability isn’t a priority, Series 12 at ~$399 is the more sensible buy for most people.
Who Should Buy the Apple Watch Ultra 4
Buy Ultra 4 if:
- You’re a serious outdoor athlete — trail running, hiking, open water swimming, climbing
- You want the longest battery life and fastest charging an Apple Watch has ever had
- You’re upgrading from the original Ultra or Ultra 2 — this is a meaningful jump
- Audio Intelligence (Live Rewind, Siri Recap) genuinely appeals to you
- You want the absolute best Apple Watch available, case redesign or not
Skip it if you already own an Ultra 3: The case is identical. The gains — S11 chip, better battery, Audio Intelligence — are real but not dramatic enough to justify replacing a working Ultra 3, unless the AI features specifically matter to you.
If WHOOP is also on your list, we broke down exactly how Ultra 4 compares to it feature by feature.
Consider Series 12 instead if:
- You don’t need outdoor durability or the larger Ultra case
- The ~$400 price difference matters to you
- You mainly use Apple Watch for everyday health and notifications
Not sure whether you need to step up to the Ultra 4—or simply move from an older standard Apple Watch? Our Series 11 vs Series 12 comparison explains what you actually gain before you spend more.

What is Apple Watch Ultra 4 leak
Update, September 9, 2026: Today is the day. Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event is happening right now at Apple Park, starting at 10 a.m. PT, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and Apple’s first foldable iPhone. The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are both expected on stage.
The Apple Watch Ultra has used essentially the same design for four years. Ultra, Ultra 2, Ultra 3 — same titanium case, same dimensions, same basic layout. Put all three side by side and most people struggle to tell them apart.
Whether the Ultra 4 finally changes that is now genuinely up for debate.
DigiTimes — the most reliable Apple supply chain publication — described the Ultra 4 in unusually strong terms back in May 2026: a “major redesign” with a “significant upgrade to sensing functions.”
They noted analysts expect this redesign to boost shipments 20–30% over last year. When DigiTimes talks like that, something genuinely different is coming.
But that claim no longer stands unchallenged. On August 6, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman — arguably the single most reliable Apple leaker over the past decade — reported that he does not expect major design changes to either the Series 12 or the Ultra 4 this year. That’s a direct conflict with DigiTimes’ framing, not just a difference in emphasis.
I’ve tracked every credible leak, supply chain report, regulatory filing, and analyst note published through August 2026. Here is the most complete picture available right now — with clear labels on what’s confirmed versus what’s still a rumor, including a source conflict that’s now central to this story.
Leak Confidence Labels
I use three labels throughout this post so you always know what to trust:
Confirmed — Named source, supply chain filing, or regulatory submission Strong Leak — Multiple independent credible sources agree
Rumor — Single source or conflicting reports
New for this update: Contested — Multiple credible named sources actively disagree with each other. This is a step below “Strong Leak,” because agreement across sources is what makes a strong leak strong. When sources conflict, treat it with more caution than either individual report would suggest on its own.
Apple Watch Ultra 4 Release Date
Confirmed by Apple’s official event announcement
The Apple Watch Ultra 4 will be announced Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. PT at Apple Park — Apple’s date, not an estimate. It shares the stage with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 lineup.
The strongest current supply chain signal: TASC — Taiwan Asia Semiconductor, Apple’s exclusive sensor supplier for the Ultra line — is expecting large-volume production orders beginning July 2026. A ramp at that scale is consistent with a September launch window.
WWDC on June 8, 2026 came and went with no watch hardware. That was expected — Apple saves watch announcements for the fall event.
Expected timeline:
- Apple fall event: Wednesday, September 9, 2026 (confirmed)
- Pre-orders open: Expected the Friday after the event — though at least one report suggests iPhone pre-orders could slip to Saturday, September 12 this year; it’s unclear if that would also affect Watch pre-orders
- Deliveries begin: Around September 19–26, 2026
- In-store availability: Late September 2026
What this means for you: If you are considering any Apple Watch Ultra purchase right now, wait — the event is now just over a week away, not a 12-week guess.
Apple Watch Ultra 4 Price
Strong Leak — No Official Price Confirmed
Apple has held the Ultra line at $799 for three consecutive generations — Ultra, Ultra 2, and Ultra 3. Most analysts expect the same entry price for the Ultra 4.
However, $799 in 2022 is roughly equivalent to $885 in 2026 dollars when adjusted for inflation. The Ultra 4 is also a significantly more complex product — new chip, redesigned sensor array, thinner titanium engineering.
A price increase to $899 is possible and some analysts expect it. Plan for $799 and accept $899 as a realistic outcome.
Design — Contested: Thinner Case, or Same as Ultra 3?
Contested — DigiTimes Says Major Redesign, Gurman Says No Major Change
This is the headline story of the Ultra 4, and as of this update, it’s genuinely unresolved. Here’s exactly where things stand and why it matters.
Supply chain reports consistently point to a 15% reduction in thickness compared to the Ultra 3. The current Ultra 3 measures 14.4mm thick. A 15% reduction brings the Ultra 4 to approximately 12.2mm — still a proper outdoor watch, but meaningfully more comfortable for all-day and overnight wear.
But on August 6, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that he does not expect major design changes to the Ultra 4 or Series 12 this year. This is a direct conflict with DigiTimes’ “major redesign” framing — not a minor wording difference.
Gurman has historically been the more reliable source on Apple’s near-term software and feature decisions; DigiTimes has historically been stronger on supply-chain hardware timing. Neither source has a clean track record advantage over the other here, which is exactly why we’re calling this “contested” rather than picking a side.
One way both reports could still be technically compatible: a slimmer case without a fundamentally different overall look or button layout could reasonably be described as “not a major redesign” by Gurman while still being a real, noticeable thickness reduction that DigiTimes’ supply chain sources picked up on.
But that’s speculation on our part to reconcile two conflicting reports — not a confirmed resolution. Treat the 15% thinner claim as meaningfully less certain than this guide previously presented it.
Additional design details:
- Square titanium case retained — core identity unchanged
- Thinner bezels — more usable screen area in the same footprint
- Second Action Button rumored — two independently programmable shortcuts
- New titanium alloys for better thermal performance and weight
- All existing Ultra bands (44/45/46/49mm) expected to remain compatible
- Possible return of ceramic casing: A new detail as of this update. Gurman reported in early August that Apple’s distinctive ceramic Apple Watch casing — offered on earlier Series models — is set to return, either later this year or in 2027. It’s unclear whether this applies to the Ultra line specifically, the Series line, or both; his reporting so far has been light on which model gets it first.
MicroLED display: Not happening for Ultra 4. Apple’s supply chain couldn’t finalize the technology for 2026. Ultra 4 uses an improved LTPO OLED panel instead — the same excellent panel as Ultra 3 but with better power efficiency.
Unlike the Apple Watch Ultra 3 which carried the same form factor for three generations, the Ultra 4 brings the first real design change since 2022.

Sensors — The Biggest Hardware Upgrade
Strong Leak — DigiTimes + Multiple Supply Chain Sources
DigiTimes specifically called the sensing upgrade “significant” — and supply chain detail fills in what that means. This part of DigiTimes’ reporting is not in direct conflict with Gurman’s comments — his “no major design changes” statement was specifically about the case and form factor, not internal sensor hardware, so treat the sensor upgrade as more solid than the thickness claim.
The Ultra 4 is expected to feature a new ring-shaped sensor array on the rear case with eight individual sensors arranged in a circular pattern. The current Ultra uses a standard flat sensor disc.
Why does the layout matter? When you’re running, cycling, or hiking at intensity, the watch shifts position on your wrist. A flat sensor disc loses consistent contact during movement and produces inaccurate readings. A ring of sensors distributed around the wrist surface means at least some sensors stay in contact even when the watch moves.
In practice: more accurate heart rate readings during hard workouts, fewer dropped readings mid-run, more reliable SpO2 tracking overnight. These are improvements you’d actually see in your data — not just spec sheet numbers.
Blood Pressure — The Most Important Health Upgrade
Strong Leak — DigiTimes + MacRumors + FDA Review Reported
This is the health story of the Ultra 4, and most coverage misses an important nuance.
If you own an Apple Watch Ultra 3, you already have Hypertension Notifications — introduced with watchOS 26 last fall. This feature analyzes blood vessel response patterns over a 30-day period and alerts you if trends suggest possible hypertension.
The Ultra 4 is expected to go further. DigiTimes reports Apple has submitted a more advanced blood pressure alert feature for FDA review — one that delivers real-time warnings based on individual readings rather than 30-day trend analysis.
The distinction matters. Monthly trend analysis tells you something might be developing over time. Real-time alerts tell you something is wrong right now. For anyone with cardiovascular risk factors, that is a meaningful clinical difference.
What it won’t do: give you a precise mmHg reading like a cuff. The optical sensor reads blood vessel response patterns — it identifies abnormalities rather than measuring absolute numbers. Still genuinely useful, just different from clinical measurement.
Apple reportedly came close to shipping a validated blood pressure feature with the Series 11 but held it back for accuracy concerns. The extra development year makes the Ultra 4 version more likely to ship reliably.
Touch ID — Probably Not Happening
Rumor — Conflicting Reports
Touch ID on Apple Watch has been the most discussed Ultra 4 rumor of 2026. Here is the honest picture.
A developer found references to “AppleMesa” — Apple’s internal Touch ID codename — in leaked firmware for 2026 Apple Watch models. That discovery is real. Possible integration points include the side button, Digital Crown, or Action Button.
However MacRumors reported in May 2026 that Apple is prioritizing battery capacity and health sensors over fingerprint authentication. A prominent Chinese leaker pushed back directly on the Touch ID speculation.
The strongest signal yet against Touch ID: Mark Gurman’s August 6 report stating he doesn’t expect major design changes to the Ultra 4 or Series 12 — and his explicit note that Touch ID would likely count as exactly that kind of major change. This is a more direct and more recent pushback than the earlier “battery concerns” framing, and it comes from the single most-cited Apple leaker currently reporting on this generation.
The reason makes practical sense: adding Touch ID hardware requires space that competes directly with battery cells and sensor components. Given Apple’s apparent prioritization of the 8-sensor ring array and battery efficiency, something had to give.
My honest assessment: closer to 15–20% probability Touch ID ships with Ultra 4, down from the 25–30% range we estimated earlier this summer. Don’t make your buying decision based on it. If it arrives, treat it as a genuine surprise, not just a bonus.
Health and Fitness Upgrades
Both the Ultra 4 and the broader 2026 Apple Watch lineup are expected to expand health monitoring meaningfully. Key areas:
- Heart rate monitoring — more reliable during high-intensity workouts via new sensor ring
- Blood oxygen (SpO2) — improved accuracy, especially at altitude
- Irregular heart rhythm detection — enhanced ECG capabilities
- Sleep tracking — better precision with the slimmer, more wearable form factor
- Fall detection and crash detection — continuing from Ultra 3
- Emergency SOS — unchanged, still the most capable emergency feature on any smartwatch
For women specifically: cycle tracking, ovulation estimates, and pregnancy tracking continue across the Apple Watch lineup.
If you’re also considering other options for health tracking, our best smartwatches for women guide covers the full range of options in 2026.
Battery Life — Real Improvement, Realistic Expectations
The Ultra 3 delivers approximately 36–42 hours in standard real-world use. Multiple leaks point to meaningful improvement for the Ultra 4.
This part of the leak picture is not directly affected by the design-change conflict — battery gains from a new chip and more efficient sensors don’t require a thinner case to materialize, so a physically larger battery cell remains possible even if the case doesn’t shrink.
Apple’s gains will primarily come from the S11 chip’s improved power efficiency and the more efficient sensor array drawing less power during continuous health monitoring.
A conservative 15–20% efficiency gain from the new chip alone could push Ultra 4 to 48–52 hours in standard use. Some leaks suggest up to 72 hours — which would require both efficiency gains and either a larger cell or reduced power draw elsewhere. Possible, but treat it as the optimistic end of the range.
Even 48 hours changes the experience. You stop thinking about charging every night. The watch becomes something you charge every other morning, briefly, rather than a daily ritual. For serious athletes and travelers, that threshold matters.
New S11 Chip
Confirmed via firmware analysis and supply chain
The Ultra 4 and Series 12 both run the Apple S11 chip — confirmed by multiple independent sources. The S10 in the Ultra 3 was essentially the same chip as the S9. Apple held back on chip development for the 2025 cycle, which frustrated many buyers.
The S11 corrects that. Built on a more advanced process node:
- Faster Apple Intelligence processing on-device — health data analysis without cloud dependency
- More efficient background health monitoring — contributes directly to battery improvement
- Improved Siri capability for watch-specific tasks
- Smoother UI across all functions
In daily use, the difference from S10 to S11 will be subtle — the Apple Watch already runs well. The meaningful gains are in health AI capability and battery efficiency, which show up in real use.
watchOS 27 — Confirmed Features
Confirmed — Previewed at WWDC June 8, 2026
watchOS 27 ships alongside the Ultra 4 in September 2026. Confirmed features from WWDC:
- Modular Ultra watch face — designed for the Ultra’s larger display, more simultaneous complications than any previous face
- Improved heart rate zone tracking — more granular real-time coaching during workouts
- Apple Intelligence on watch — smarter notification summarization, context-aware health suggestions
- Live conversation translation — real-time translation on the wrist, useful for international travel
- Redesigned Workout app — smoother activity switching mid-session
- Enhanced Siri — faster, more capable on-device responses
watchOS 27 is compatible with Series 10 and later, and Ultra 3. Some S11-dependent features will be Ultra 4 and Series 12 exclusive.
Blood Glucose — Not for 2026
Confirmed Not Coming
Non-invasive glucose monitoring is not expected for any 2026 Apple Watch model. Apple has been developing the technology for years, but it is not ready for consumer-grade accuracy.
This is a 2027 or later feature. Do not factor it into your purchase decision.
If you’re the type who likes to know what’s coming before committing to a purchase, we’ve got a running list of upcoming smartwatch launches you’ll probably want to bookmark.

How Ultra 4 Compares to the Competition
vs Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2
Samsung announces the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 on July 22, 2026 — two months before Apple’s fall event. It brings a confirmed Snapdragon Wear Elite chip, rumored 800mAh battery, 5G connectivity in the US, and potential glucose monitoring.
For iPhone users there is no real choice — Apple Watch Ultra 4 is the only option that works fully with iPhone.
For Android users considering the premium smartwatch category, we cover the Samsung side in full in our Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 & Watch 9 complete leaks guide.
vs Garmin Fenix 9
Garmin’s fēnix 9 officially launched on August 25, 2026, at $999.99, with confirmed battery life of up to 291 days in power-saving mode on the Pro Solar tier — a figure the still-unannounced Ultra 4 has no realistic path to matching. Garmin remains the choice for serious outdoor athletes who need weeks (or months) of battery life and offline navigation; the Ultra 4’s expected improvements don’t change that fundamental gap. Apple’s case is built on everyday health features, emergency safety tools, and ecosystem depth instead.
We cover the full breakdown in our Garmin Fenix 9 vs Apple Watch Ultra 4 comparison including battery life, GPS accuracy, and training metrics side by side.
vs Apple Watch Series 12
The Series 12 launches alongside Ultra 4 at the same September event. It also gets the S11 chip, watchOS 27, and likely blood pressure monitoring. But it won’t have the rugged titanium build, the 8-sensor ring array, the second Action Button, or the larger battery capacity.
If outdoor durability and maximum sensor accuracy aren’t your priorities, the Series 12 at around $399 is the smarter financial decision. We cover the full 2026 Apple Watch lineup in our Apple Watch 2026 complete feature guide.
If you’re also comparing the Ultra 4 against Samsung’s upcoming lineup, our Galaxy Watch 9 vs Apple Watch Series 12 comparison covers the mainstream tier of both brands.
Who Should Buy the Apple Watch Ultra 4
Buy Ultra 4 if:
- You’re a serious outdoor athlete — trail running, hiking, open water swimming, climbing
- You’ve been waiting for the Ultra to receive a real redesign — this is finally it
- You’re upgrading from the original Ultra or Ultra 2 — the Ultra 4 is the first genuine reason to upgrade
- Blood pressure monitoring is something you’d actually use
- You want the absolute best Apple Watch available
Wait for Ultra 5 if:
- You already own the Ultra 3 — improvements are real but not dramatic for current Ultra owners
- Glucose monitoring is the specific feature you want — that’s not 2026
- Touch ID was what you were counting on — it likely won’t be there
Consider Series 12 instead if:
- You don’t need outdoor durability or the larger Ultra case
- The ~$400 price difference matters to you
- You mainly use Apple Watch for everyday health and notifications
Buy Ultra 3 now if:
- You need a rugged Apple Watch immediately and can’t wait until September
- You find Ultra 3 at a meaningful discount — prices are already softening at some retailers, which historically signals an incoming new model
Should You Buy Ultra 3 Now or Wait?
Ultra 3 prices are already dropping at some retailers. That’s a reliable early signal that a successor is close.
Whether the Ultra 4 is “the most meaningful upgrade the Ultra line has seen since 2022” is now a genuinely open question — that framing depended heavily on the thinner case shipping as DigiTimes described, and Gurman’s August 6 comments have introduced real doubt about that.
What’s not in doubt: the sensor ring, the S11 chip, and the blood pressure feature are all still credibly reported and would be worthwhile upgrades on their own, even without a case redesign.
If you can wait, wait — Apple’s event is confirmed for September 9, 2026, so you’ll know exactly what you’re getting in just over a week, before spending $799.
