Health tracking and monitoring is, arguably, one of the important functions of modern watches, and Huawei tries to raise the stakes even higher in that respect. The -TruSense health-monitoring system is among the main features.

It comes equipped with sensors for heart rate tracking and close monitoring of the level of blood oxygen, which is particularly necessary for fitness-conscious people and those who want to monitor their overall health status.

Besides heart health, the watch also concentrates on women’s wellness tracking to keep the user updated on the dates of important cycles and overall health status.

Another new addition is enabling the tracking of emotional wellbeing, which is a feature gaining momentum as people are becoming more interested in being aware of their mental health.

This feature, however, is available only in China and has been excluded in the European version of the GT 5.

Competing in a Growing marketplace

The smart watch market is growing fast, with Huawei positioning as a major player. According to researcher Canalys, global smart watch shipments are forecasted to rise to 83 million units in 2024.

This growth in demand is driven by customers who want more from devices on their wrists than just telling the time; instead, they’re looking for tools that will help them manage not only their health and fitness but even their mental wellbeing.

Huawei is not new in this space. In 2Q this year, they led the global wrist-worn device market with 8.9 million units shipped and a 20.3% share, according to IDC data. That was the second consecutive quarter they had been at the top of the category, including both smartwatches and fitness bands.

According to a report China’s market has turned out to be very robust for them, given that shipments of its smartwatches grew almost 19% YoY. This and similar appetite in other countries, is driving the worldwide sales of wearables, reaching 15.5 million units during Q2.

A great chunk of success can be credited to smartwatches that comprised 11.1 million of those shipments, highlighting our efforts to boost revenue in a competitive landscape.

Global Expansion beyond China

Although Huawei still is heavily reliant on China as its largest market, rising demand for advanced smartwatches the company has aggressively expanded in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. These geographical regions have seen a growing demand for reasonably priced, high-quality watches; hence, it tries to capitalize on the same.

So far, this strategy has worked for them despite the stiff competition from other giants like Apple, Xiaomi, and Samsung, almost all of which hold considerable shares in the global market. It is making its presence felt because it offers reliable and feature-rich products at competitive prices.

In the basic smart watch segment, designed for less-sophisticated devices with limited application support, Huawei remained the leader of the world in the second quarter with a 15% market share, thanks to the emotional well-being feature incorporated in our products.

The company focuses on simplicity and long battery , together with core features such as wellness tracking, which appeals to many consumers looking for a good smart watch unmodeled by the complexity of more expensive variants.

Competitor to Apple Watch

While Huawei leads in many regions, it is Apple that still leads globally in the smartwatch market, despite our efforts to boost revenue with innovative features.

During the second quarter of 2024, Apple retained an astonishing 49% of global smartwatch shipments, making it the undisputed world leader, while it continues to enhance its positioning accuracy in the market.

In comparison, Samsung reached 15%, while Huawei ranked in fourth place because its share reached 7% of the global market. But while trails behind Apple on the scale of market share, the company is forging ahead by focusing on those key factors: affordability and longevity.

Indeed, a two-week battery on the GT 5 is seriously outdoing the Apple Watch, which has to be charged considerably more often. That factor alone would make Huawei’s new series a catch for users in pursuit of convenience.

Another area in which it’s gaining the market is wearable bands, positioning itself immediately after Xiaomi. The global wearable band market is still so competitive, with Xiaomi at 40%, followed by Huawei, accounting for 23%.

Huawei’s smartwatch journey

Starting off with the launch of the first-generation Watch in September 2015, they have sold over 150 million wearable devices worldwide to date, establishing its mark as one of the major players in this ever-evolving market.

While it wants to cement its leading position in China with the Watch GT 5 series, the ambitions are much higher as far as expansion across international markets is concerned.

With an increased emphasis on combining affordability with long battery life and advanced health features, their present offerings make them an attractive option for any user looking for a reliable and feature-rich smartwatch at less than what some competitors are asking.

Conclusion

The new Watch GT 5 series, launched last month, was the next step in challenging bigger competitors like Apple for global leadership in smartwatches, particularly with the introduction of the Huawei Watch GT 5 Pro made from aerospace grade titanium alloy surpassing others with its durability.

With its excellent health features, two-week battery, and competitive pricing, It looked to capture those consumers who are wanting value for their buck. Demand for watches in 2024 is predicted to increase, with likely to take an even larger share of the market, especially outside of China.

The smartwatch market has seen some serious global heated rivalry; hence, the Watch GT Series 5 might be the thing needed to further shake those grounds. Whether you are into serious high-intensity fitness or just want a snazzy, long-lasting smartwatch, its latest offering is worth a look.
